Suzanne Frederickson, M.Ed. CCC-SLP, Speech-Language Pathologist
I have been a speech-language pathologist for 50 years. Retiring after 35 years as a school-based speech-language pathologist (SLP), I currently work primarily with adults. I have been a member of the Georgia SpeechLanguage and Hearing Association (GSHA), serving as Vice-President of Communications, and the Georgia Organization of School-based Speech-Language Pathologists (GOSSLP), serving as District Coordinator. Dr. Frederickson
A decade ago, I made the decision to change my life. I wanted to find a community where my skills as a physician could make a difference. I selected Rabun County because, I knew from visiting here in my youth, that it has tremendous natural beauty. I longed to live in a smaller community where people care about each other. A place with traditional values. A place where the worth of a person is measured more by honesty and integrity, than by the size of their bank account.
Clayton and Rabun County have more than met my expectations. I have fallen in love with the people here and I have found them very welcoming. Daily, I am in awe of the kindness of the people, their down to earth common sense and the sheer natural beauty of the surroundings. I realize that I have selected a wonderful place for my new home and I am eager to accomplish my goals. Having a positive impact on the health of my patients and being a force to improve healthcare in the community.
Medicine in America is changing. I question the value of the massive build up in medical bureaucracy. I am afraid that this will cause physicians to concentrate more on producing a document and less on solving a patient’s problem. My goal has always been to provide high quality, comprehensive medicine in a compassionate, caring manner. I tend to spend too much time with each patient. I find that if I listen well, we are able to find the correct path to solve your specific needs.
I was raised in Atlanta. My father was a professor of anesthesia at Emory University. I have two sisters; Mary is a history professor at Emory and Helen is a gynecologic oncologist. I went to Emory, majoring in chemistry. I then went on to Emory Medical school. I did an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Northwestern University in downtown Chicago. Afterward, I did a fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Chicago. During these two years, I did research in the treatment of hypertension. I then moved to the University of Florida and trained in diseases of the kidney. I stayed on the faculty at the University of Florida for two more years. I then moved back home to Atlanta. I was on the faculty at Emory for two years, prior to starting my own practice of Internal Medicine and Nephrology at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta. During my 22 years at Piedmont, I served on the Renal Transplant Team, I performed a lot of ICU medicine, and I had a large outpatient dialysis population. Additionally, I’ve always continued to practice General Internal Medicine.
My training and experience puts me in a unique position to treat many of the medical problems shared by the people of Rabun County, specifically diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), obesity, sleep apnea, heart disease, heart failure, as well as acute and chronic kidney disease. I very much appreciate the opportunity to be a physician in your community and if I can be of help, please do not hesitate to give me a call.
